Our summer interns Jennifer Bonilla and Renata Schmult have just wrapped up their time with us here at Boom Box. It’s been such a pleasure having them both with us the past few months and we’re excited for their futures in the sound industry! We took a moment to chat with Jennifer and Renata to hear about their internship experience.
1. Apart from the sound work itself, what was your favorite part about interning for BBP this summer?
Renata: I really enjoyed getting to know everyone in the office and going through lessons with my co-intern Jennifer! Everyone was really kind and open to giving me advice. I also enjoyed the flexibility of the program and how I was able to spend time on additional areas of my interests that weren't in the curriculum like recording and editing sound effects for the library.
Jennifer: My favorite part about interning for BBP this past spring was being able to learn more about how post works overall.
2. Which intern lesson did you find the most challenging?
Renata: The dialog editing lesson was definitely the most challenging. It was the topic I was least familiar with so there was a lot of content to cover and the editors here can hear such small details in the audio it was challenging to adjust my ear and pick what needed to be removed.
Jennifer: The most challenging lesson I had was probably the dialogue lesson. It really challenged me to hear things differently and having never used RX before, it was definitely a learning curve. Shout out logan because they really can hear everything!
3. Which lesson was the most fun?
Renata: I really enjoyed the sound effects lesson. I thought the clip we cut to had a lot of interesting elements and I really liked being able to dive into the library and build everything up from scratch.
Jennifer: The most fun would probably be the SFX and predub lessons. It’s one thing to watch someone do it, but it was really fun building up sounds from the library for my own clip and then bringing a different life into it. The predub lesson was all new to me so I just enjoyed learning about it in general.
4. What did you feel you gained the most from the internship at BBP?
Renata: I was able to get a lot of great advice about coverage, navigating the sound effects library, and taking my editorial to the next level of detail. The biggest thing I'm taking away is how to cut and deliver work that not only sounds great but is laid out in a way that's easy to understand and mix when it leaves my computer.
Jennifer: Coming from more of a music background, it was nice to dive into a different world of sound and meet everyone in the office who all share the same passion for it. It was a great opportunity to learn about the different elements that bring sound to animation.
5. Do you plan to continue exploring a career in the sound industry?
Renata: Yes, I'm currently working freelance and am hoping to move into an entry level role in post sound to eventually become a sound effects editor or Foley artist.
Jennifer: I am still navigating through what I want to do exactly, but I’m not opposed to pursuing a career in the sound industry. I do kind of miss being a bit more on hands-on with the technical aspect of it but then again I am still learning what I fully like and don’t like!
6. What advice would you give the next intern?
Renata: Ask a lot of questions, be open to learning everything, and if there's something you're interested in that you'd like to see more in depth express your interest because they will make an effort to cater the program to what you want to learn.
Jennifer: I would say to have fun with all the projects, this is the time to explore your taste through sound and being able to search through the library to bring life into your projects!
