A COLLABORATIVE POST
WRITTEN BY BOOM BOX POST

2020 was a year unlike any other. So much so that it was hard to put into words how we felt about it. For that reason, at the end of the year I asked our Boom Box Post team to pick a sound effect that they felt best described 2020. We had so much fun with that post that we thought we would do it again this year. So again I asked the BBP team, “If 2021 was a sound effect, what would it be?” Here’s what everyone had to say:

JEFF

Co-Owner

“Back in 2020, we had the introduction of COVID and the world turned upside down. We pivoted our business to a remote workflow and powered through. But 2021 was an entirely different beast. We wanted to go from surviving to thriving, setting out a plan to launch the next major phase of Boom Box Post. With the purchase and remodel of our new facility, Boom Box Verdugo, 2021 has easily been the craziest year of my career. Every free minute outside of our work has been dedicated to our future home. This year has felt like a freight train, barreling towards our exciting destination, the future of Boom Box Post.”

JACOB

Re-Recording Mixer

“I think this up and down slide whistle represents 2021 and all of it's wild ups and downs, like being on a roller coaster!.”

TESS

Supervising Sound Editor

“I’m not one to wish my life away, but this year has certainly been one of wishing for life to go back to “normal.” I’ve been waiting for the world to get back to it’s bustling, happy, healthy nature and waiting to get my butt into that fancy new office awaiting Boom Box. It’s been a long year of watching time pass, so for me, this year is a ticking clock.”

BRAD

Supervising Sound Editor

“I think the sound that represents 2021 is the sound of a vaccine shot! Suck it, COVID!”

JD

Sound Effects Editor

“How does Gross Spitty Mouth Farts not describe 2021? See also 2020.”

Tim

Studio Manager / Assistant Sound Editor

“A lot of big changes were set into motion this year. In fact, the whole month of October was spent packing up the old BBP office in preparation for our new building. I feel like packing tape and wrapping plastic will forever be ingrained in my brain haha.”

GREG

Sound Effects Editor

“This is essentially how I’ve felt for a good bit of 2021. It’s less excessive/aggressive than last year’s zombie attack sound that felt representational of the year (see SFX SCAVENGER HUNT: IF 2020 WAS A SFX, WHAT WOULD IT BE? for reference)…but it has still been a bit of an exhaustive year, everything still feels pretty much on fire, but closer to an ongoing steady smolder rather than chaos. Also has had moments of being difficult for maintaining my usual, more healthy mental state as consistently, yet have done my best to try to press on and pretend things are normal. Essentially this is my sound representation of the classic meme/gif of the dog sitting at the table with the house on fire saying, ‘This is fine….’ which feels about right.”

NATALIA

Sound Effects Editor

“This first one is a bit self explanatory, we’re still in COVID times and it’s my reaction to it never ending.”

“This past year has been a weird one regarding time, it feels like it’s not passing by although it is and things start mixing into each other, kind of like a time warp of sorts.”

KATIE

Sound Effects Editor

“This year has been busy with lots of new projects and things to do. I've definitely poured way too many cups of coffee!”

CAROL

Foley Editor

“The sound of a constant fire sums up 2021 to me because it feels like everything going wrong, but kind of accepting it and just getting lost in it. There's really no concept of time (I honestly constantly forget it's 2021), everything is pretty much up in flames, and we can really only sit there and watch.”

Zanne

Office Manager / Assistant Sound Editor

“Life is #bustling more than ever.”

NOW IT’S YOUR TURN! IF YOU HAD TO PICK A SOUND EFFECT FOR 2021, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
