Jon Odate

“It's pronounced Oh Dah Teh, or Oh Dah Tay. Either is fine!”

What grabbed your interest in sound for Television & Film?

Honestly, and this might sound cliche, but it was Star Wars for sure. The work that Ben Burtt did for the first 6 films was incredible and I think it changed film-making forever. His style stuck, influencing Matthew Wood and the rest of the crew at Skywalker Sound. The fact that he was able to convey so much emotion in one little droid is unreal. I mean if you need more proof, just watch Wall-E!

Do you have a favorite sound moment from a movie or TV show?

First I have to preface and ask what you think a time machine sounds like? If you were to say a key rubbing on a section of bass note piano wire you’d probably think I was crazy. Yet here we are 57 years later and this sound of a piano wire is being used to this day for the sound of the Tardis in Doctor Who.

If you could only watch one TV show for the rest of your life, what would you watch?

Well if the answer above wasn’t obvious enough… it’s Doctor Who! To this day I still haven’t seen every episode of the show and probably never will. It’s a shame that the show lost some episodes due to the lack of archiving back in the 60’s. It’s a show that is able to reinvent itself all the time thanks to an ingenious mechanic of the main character being able to regenerate their body when severely damaged. I love it!

“Play this sound and anyone who knows Doctor Who will come flocking towards you! (No guarantees though!)”

What are three things you would bring with you to a deserted island?

  1. A Nintendo Switch, with a library filled with Stardew Valley, Breath of the Wild and Puyo Puyo Tetris

  2. A Leatherman - way better than a pocket knife.

  3. A Goal Zero Nomad 7 Solar Kit. (Is this considered cheating?)

“Is it bad that I’ve thought about this question a lot?”

What grabbed your interest in sound for Television & Film?

When I realized that the sound of film and television is what sticks in peoples’ memories as well as its ability to define and bring life to characters, places, or things.

Do you have a favorite sfx or sound moment from a movie or TV show?

The seismic bomb explosion in Star Wars Episode II gives me goosebumps every time.

If you could only watch one tv show for the rest of your life, what would you watch?

I don’t know what this says about me, but South Park.

What genre of music would be the score to your life?

Probably elevator music with bursts of hard rock. I try to keep calm and relaxed, but have those moments of stress and action.

What has been your favorite part about this internship so far?

I love being able to observe and ask questions to employees on their sound design or mixing choices. It’s great getting to know the team and their paths more too!

What are three things you would bring with you to a deserted island?

  1. REI tent

  2. Water filter

  3. A piano
