A COLLABORATIVE POST
WRITTEN BY BOOM BOX POST

Over the course of this winter, Boom Box Post has diligently worked on a number of new shows and special projects. We are proud to announce that two feature films that we worked on are now streaming! They were both a blast to sound design and mix, and we are incredibly excited to be able to share them with the world!

Interview with our editors

We asked questions to a few editors that worked on Baby Shark’s Big Movie and Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever. Our dedicated editors put in their efforts to ensure each project has achieved its maximum potential in terms of sound quality, delivering an exceptional experience for both the audience, and our clients. Let’s see what they have to say about their work!

What did you enjoy most about working on Baby Shark’s Big Movie? What was most challenging?

For Baby Shark’s Big Movie, I loved creating funny moments by designing new cartoon sound effects for the movie. We were able to add so much to the playful visuals to create hilarious and absurd cartoon reactions and sequences. The most challenging aspect was creating all of the different phases of the Siren Stone. The sound effects team needed to create a palette of sounds that would represent the stone untouched, when it’s active, when it’s being used for evil, and when it’s reversing back to good. We carefully selected sounds that were both magical and mysterious without sounding too dangerous or weapon-like.

I really enjoyed working on Baby Shark’s Big Movie! It was definitely a highlight of my 2023. I absolutely loved working on this project and really enjoyed cutting all the toony accent sound effects. I think the end product turned out amazing. Also, growing up a fan of High School Musical, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, and Phineas and Ferb, it was a dream come true to work on a project starring Ashley Tisdale.
The most challenging part about Baby Shark is that it’s set underwater, which meant cutting lots of water movement. Maybe I’m insane, but certain bubbles and sloshes sounded better for different movements. Therefore I wasn’t cutting the same water file over and over. Instead, I was trying to match the movements as best as possible. For example, some bubbles sound more positive, therefore, I’m going to use them for an upward arm swish.

Who was your favorite character in baby shark’s big movie?

Stariana, of course.

What was your favorite design in Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever.

My favorite design was probably the snow plow because it has its own personality. The snow plow was angry, old, and worked hard, so we messed around with several effects to create a design that sounded scary and huge.
— Natalia Saavedra Brychcy, Sound Effects Editor
My favorite design of the movie was the sequence where Greg’s anxiety overtakes him when he sees the police. He has a moment where he’s totally in his own head and panicking and the sound design needed to emulate that feeling. We used trailer hits, suspense elements, and heightened sound effects to highlight Greg’s fear. We utilized exaggerated elements like huge steel hits, reverb-y cannon shots, and giant bank deadbolt locks for things like the jail cell door. The entire scene rises in sound and pitch with an increasing heartbeat, reverse cymbals and other rising elements to crescendo to the end of his anxiety dream.

We will have more projects released in the following months, so stay tuned!
