A COLLABORATIVE POST
WRITTEN BY BOOM BOX POST

We have a new Office Manager/Assistant Editor at Boom Box Post! It is our pleasure to introduce you to Jayson!

When did you realize you wanted to pursue a career in audio post production?

My third year of undergrad, studying music production, we were given an assignment to sound design and score a scene from a sci-fi Mars exploration show. This was my first time working with sound for picture and I found it incredibly fun and rewarding. From that point on I realized I wanted to pursue a career in post production sound for TV and film over music production.

What Grabbed your interest in sound for animated TV series?

When I first started working on projects doing post production sound, I was pretty much exclusively doing live action. It wasn’t until my second year of grad school that I got to work on some animated shorts. I was immediately drawn to sound for animation. I felt like there were no limits to what could be done. I was given much more freedom to think outside the box. Working on animated projects also felt more collaborative to me compared to the live-action projects I had worked on up until that point.

So far, what is something new you have learned from this position?

I would say that one of the most important things I’ve learned is the general workflow between the individual editing departments (SFX, Dialogue, and Foley) and predub and rerecording mixers and how it all comes together. However, a favorite new Pro Tools trick I’ve learned is Ctrl+Opt+Shift+3 which creates a sine wave audio clip. This makes creating 2 pops, tail pops, and tone so much quicker!

What is your favorite animated TV show or movie?

It’s so difficult to just pick one but a couple of my favorite animated TV series include, the original Teen Titans show, Avatar the Last Airbender, and Courage the Cowardly Dog. Some of my favorite animated films include Ratatouille, Zootopia, Emperor’s New Groove, and my dark horse pick, The Great Mouse Detective.

What was the last show you binge watched?

I was a little late to the party but I recently finished watching Arcane and I highly recommend it! I also did a rewatch of American Vandal recently, which is one of my favorite shows ever!

If you had to describe yourself as a sound effect, what would it be?

I would say a really nice solid boot footstep, not super flashy but consistent and lays a good foundation.
