Supervising Sound Editor, Tess Fournier, gave us an inside look at some toon sound effects that she recently created!

TESS, TELL US A BIT ABOUT HOW YOU CREATED THESE TOON SOUNDS?

For the blinks recording, I took some old recordings that I created in college. I had this melody harp, which is basically a flat wooden board with strings on it and recorded a whole bunch of different string plucks. I tried to get as many variations as I could and then with these string plucks I mixed them with some glass tapping and that is how I got to these blinks!

I had some fun with this next one! For the surprise reaction, I again started with a string pluck which did not really have any variation to it or fluctuation and then drew in some animation to add that fluctuation and then I just pitched it up over time. I also tried experimenting by adding other toony sounds mixed with it to see what I could come up with.

This last one was not much of a process for me. I created my own version of a slide whistle. I just used a pitch pipe and tried out different pitches, not much to it. I think it is a pretty simple but an important toon sound to have!

Let us know what cool toon sounds you have created in the comments section below!
