In the spirit of Halloween, we brought back another edition of the “Death by Sound Effect” series! For those unfamiliar with this sound design challenge: we brainstorm a list of some imaginative (and gruesome) ways one’s life could end, then ask our sound editors to pick one and design the sound of it. Let’s see what they came up with!

As we prepare to flip our calendars from September to October and officially enter Spooky Season, I felt it was appropriate to take a look and listen to the origin story of these iconic soundtracks, and how they shaped our perception of the sound of Halloween over the years.
We love to put our editors to the test to see what kind of SFX builds they can come up with! For Halloween this year, we thought it would be fun to see how well they can design a realistic, classic Halloween creature. From werewolves, vampire, and zombies, to banshees, let’s see what they came up with!
Picking up where Kate left off back in 2015, I decided to try my hand at crafting a soundtrack that evoked the spirit of slasher movies! Including all the cliche hits like chainsaws, blood curdling screams, jump-scares and spooky forests. Take a listen!
To celebrate Halloween in a gruesome style, we decided to do part two of: Death by Sound Effect. We came up with a cause of death and put our editors to the task to create a gross, gruesome sound build. Let’s see what they came up with!
Whether I’m working on a Halloween special or just a spooky scene, I often find myself needing to make scary vocals. There are so many ways to achieve a haunting voice, but I’m going to talk about a few tools that I like to use. To get started, you need four plugins and a vocal recording. This can be laughing, a spooky saying, or even an elongated breath.
In this month's interview post we chat with Mak Kellerman, one of our talented sound effects editors here at Boom Box Post. Mak has worked with Boom Box Post on Future-Worm, Pickle and Peanut, Penn-Zero: Part Time Hero and many other exciting animated shows. Mak is expert at creating interesting sci-fi builds and today he was working on creating the sound of an evil haunted portal!
When I was a child, my brother and I would happily forego the majority of our trick-or-treat time in order to put on a free haunted house in our basement for the neighborhood kids. We planned it for weeks and had everything from the quintessential haunted "bowl of brains" (cold spaghetti noodles) to a gauntlet where hidden ghouls grabbed at your ankles.
The key element of this yearly extravaganza was always the cheesy haunted house soundtrack cassette tape that we played on a portable boom box.
So, in the spirit of Halloween, I brought together the whole crew at Boom Box Post, and we recorded some very cheesy and spooky vocals. Then, I recreated that classic spooky cassette tape!
