AN INTERVIEW WITH JOHNATHAN LOPEZ

ASSISTANT SOUND EDITOR/OFFICE MANAGER, BOOM BOX POST

Johnathan Lopez recently joined the Boom Box team as our new assistant editor and office manager.  Johnathan was a stellar Boom Box intern, and we are thrilled to have him back to work with us again.

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?

I grew up here in the San Fernando Valley, first in Pacoima, then San Fernando, and now Sylmar.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CHOOSE POST-PRODUCTION SOUND AS A CAREER?

The internship here at Boom Box Post inspired me.  It also has to do with my obsession with videogames and cartoons, which are a huge influence in my life.

How did being a BBP intern help you transition into working here full time?

The technical part of the job, all of the lessons we got and one-on-ones with editors and with Jeff and Kate really helped me understand what was expected.  I also learned about being ready to switch gears at the drop of a hat, being open to possibilities.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OUTSIDE OF WORK?

I play A LOT of Dungeons & Dragons, I’m in 3 separate groups, and I DM one.  I think it’s fun that I get to be someone else for a couple hours, work in a team with my friends.   A lot of my characters are interpretations of myself, so it gives me a chance to experience things outside of what I might actually see in my life.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SOUND TO EXPERIENCE IN REAL LIFE?

Crunching dry leaves.  I think because fall is my favorite season, and hearing it reminds me of that.

What’s your favorite sound you have heard around the office?

Brad was making this really weird squishy sound of something being pushed inside a character’s body, and it was very fitting, but also unexpected.

WHAT IS THE STRANGEST THING THAT YOU ACTUALLY LIKE THE SOUND OF?

For me it’s coins.  When you flick them, or throw them, that metal, resonant sound.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ANIMATED MOVIE?

Probably the one that I never get tired of is The Emperor’s New Groove.  Kuzco is my favorite Disney princess.

WHAT IS THE LAST BOOK YOU READ?

Sabriel by Garth Nix.  It’s about a woman who inherits necromantic powers from her father and she has to save a kingdom.

IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE TO WAKE UP TO ONE OF THESE AS YOUR ALARM CLOCK SOUND FOR THE REST OF THE LIFE, WHICH WOULD YOU PREFER: A CHIMPANZEE SCREAM OR A KLAXON ALARM?

I think a Chimpanzee scream, because t take me forever to get up, and that sound would terrify me.  I would be awake instantly!

IF BOOM BOX POST WERE A COLOR, WHICH COLOR WOULD IT BE?

Light Blue.  That color is everywhere here.
