For aspiring editors and audio students, I always come across one tip in—to start building up a personal SFX library. So I complied a list of 10 spring inspired sounds, that if you have access to, you should go out and record this refreshing time of year!
As sound editors, speaking about sound design with clients requires a kind of foreign language. I often find myself making silly noises in an effort to either interpret what a client is looking for or to pitch an idea of my own. There’s a shorthand however, that both editor and filmmaker are aware of. An entire language has been laid out for us in the incredible work of sound designers past. I’m talking about films that are ‘in the canon’ for having memorable sound design moments.
When I was a child, my brother and I would happily forego the majority of our trick-or-treat time in order to put on a free haunted house in our basement for the neighborhood kids. We planned it for weeks and had everything from the quintessential haunted "bowl of brains" (cold spaghetti noodles) to a gauntlet where hidden ghouls grabbed at your ankles.
The key element of this yearly extravaganza was always the cheesy haunted house soundtrack cassette tape that we played on a portable boom box.
So, in the spirit of Halloween, I brought together the whole crew at Boom Box Post, and we recorded some very cheesy and spooky vocals. Then, I recreated that classic spooky cassette tape!
